MINERVE

Evaluate Silver — Understand Your Object’s Value

A useful silver valuation answers a specific question: what could the object sell for, what should be recorded for an inheritance, or what basis is needed for insurance? MINERVE considers the object, its condition and comparable market evidence, then explains the type of value being discussed.

Value begins with identification

We consider maker, period, assay marks, silver standard, construction, condition, completeness and supported provenance. The assessment separates a potentially collectable object from a calculation of metal content. An attribution that remains uncertain is described as uncertain.

Choose the right valuation basis

The report should state the currency, valuation date, scope of examination and reasons behind the range. A historic asking price is not the same as a completed sale, and an estimated value is not a promise of proceeds.

  • Sale: a realistic range in a stated market, with selling costs considered separately.
  • Direct purchase: an actual offer following examination, distinct from an estimated retail price.
  • Insurance or succession: a dated written report with its purpose and valuation basis agreed in advance.

What to send for a first assessment

The initial assessment from photographs is free, normally within three working days. A formal written report or a larger collection is quoted separately; physical examination may be necessary.

  • Overall photographs and close-ups of every hallmark, maker’s mark and inscription.
  • Dimensions, known weight and a piece-by-piece list for sets.
  • Repairs, missing parts, invoices, prior valuations and the purpose of the assessment.

Is the valuation simply the weight multiplied by a silver price?

No. Maker, condition, completeness and demand can matter substantially. Weighted or filled parts also mean gross weight may not represent silver content.

Is the first valuation free?

The preliminary opinion from photographs is free and carries no obligation to sell. A formal written valuation is quoted before the work begins.

Can a valuation change?

Yes. A valuation is dated and depends on its market, purpose and the evidence available. New attribution evidence or a change in condition or demand can affect it.
